The film felt distinct from Tombstone, which makes judging it difficult because one prioritizes historical accuracy while the other focuses on enjoyment. If considered as a biographical picture of Wyatt Earp, it’s quite good and balanced; but when placed alongside Tombstone, which was more purely a Western, it feels like something is missing. The ending felt rushed, and some casting choices didn't work well. Even though I enjoy his performances, Kevin Costner wasn't ideally suited to play Earp. Similarly, Dennis Quaid, whom I also appreciate as an actor, didn’t quite capture the character of Doc Holliday. Perhaps in the 1980s my view would have been different, but both actors seemed a little too old for their roles and the period depicted. I appreciated the aspects of Earp's story that were included, although I was disappointed that Luke Short wasn’t featured (he deserves his own film), and I found the narrative progression to be well-handled. As a biographical movie, it has an expansive scope; its comparison to a traditional Western is what holds it back.
