This movie could easily lay claim to being among the most violent films ever created. It's like a reality show, similar to "Survivor," but set deep within the West Virginia wilderness where the participants and film crew are attacked by a family of deformed backwoods people. Henry Rollins portrays the host, who has the personality of a drill sergeant. "Wrong Turn 2: Dead End" (2007) is part of a series of films centered on cannibalistic hillbillies living in Appalachia. The power and disturbing nature of "Deliverance" (1972) come from the feeling that what's depicted could realistically occur. The original “Wrong Turn” film, released in 2003, began with a similar premise but gradually became increasingly far-fetched. As a result, it was enjoyable and engaging, though not genuinely frightening. This installment incorporates more obvious silliness and humor while greatly increasing the amount of gore. It might have been the most violent movie ever made when it came out. While entertaining to some degree, despite the unpleasant content—not just blood but also sleaze—it doesn't truly create a sense of dread because it’s so exaggerated that it feels like a cartoon. Rollins performs adequately as the enthusiastic host, and several of the main characters are likable enough to root for. Sadly, one of the most pleasant characters is among the first to die. I'm not referring to Kimberly Caldwell, who appears early on, although her fate provides some amusement in a darkly humorous way. Aleksa Palladino, who plays Mara, makes an impression with her feminine presence. Crystal Lowe (Elena) is attractive, but her character proves to be unpleasant. Erica Leerhsen (Nina), who was memorable as the Wiccan woman in "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2" (2000), still looks good, though she seems thinner than before. The mutant locals are well-designed, although many resemble Klingons from the original "Star Trek," only less appealing. Despite having some entertainment value, “Wrong Turn 2” is so over-the-top in its effort to be shocking and funny that it diminishes its effect. Subtlety can often be more effective. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 33 minutes, and was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. GRADE: C
