This film centers on an arcade game antagonist who grows tired of seeing others receive recognition while he’s consistently cast as the bad guy. "Ralph" resolves to leave his own game and attempt to become like his friend "Fix-it Felix," seeking acceptance and popularity. His initial interaction is with "Sgt. Calhoun" in a space shooter, but instead of succeeding, he inadvertently causes widespread destruction, putting the entire arcade at risk. How can this situation be averted? It seems that might depend on his new, energetic companion, "Vanellope." She's identified as a “glitch” from an adjacent racing game—which visually resembles something out of "Wonkaland"—and they must collaborate and race to stop the escalating malicious plans of "King Candy.” The movie is passable; it may resonate more with those who are gamers, but I wasn’t particularly moved by the rather commonplace themes of someone feeling unappreciated seeking approval and connection in a harsh environment. Certain aspects of the animation are enjoyable, including nods to Pac-Man, and there's a good amount of energetic action within the hundred-minute runtime of this animated story—it just felt that the plot itself was weak and formulaic for my taste, and there’s an excess of talking.
