Brad Pitt portrays “Gerry,” whose life and family become entangled in an apocalyptic situation when a zombie outbreak threatens everyone. This isn't a localized American story; it encompasses the entire globe. Luckily for humankind, "Gerry" used to work as an investigator for the United Nations, though that shouldn’t deter anyone since he proves quite capable. To protect his loved ones, he accepts a job from Deputy Secretary General “Umatoni” (Fana Mokoena), attempting to discover a remedy for the illness causing all of this chaos. This quest leads him to Jerusalem and then, conveniently via Belarus airways, to Cardiff, where there might be a chance if he can reach a WHO laboratory before the virus spreads. The visual effects are impressive, and the team responsible for zombie makeup has skillfully transformed people into frightening figures without relying on cheap or unrealistic methods. Pitt performs adequately as an intelligent yet active hero, and while the concept isn’t groundbreaking, it does attempt to incorporate the world into both the problem and its resolution, which provides opportunities for Peter Capaldi and Elyes Gabel to contribute an international perspective. There are numerous sequences, with a human assault on the Israeli capital potentially being the most memorable moment as bullets and helicopters fill the air above that significant location. Those who look closely may even recognize John Gordon Sinclair (known from “Gregory’s Girl” in 1980) as a navy SEAL. The film boasts high production values, and director Marc Forster maintains a brisk pace; if you enjoy science fiction horror films that are consistently action-packed with just a touch of scientific explanation, then this is perfectly acceptable.
