The initial notes of "Pure Imagination" hint at what’s in store, and generally it's a solid showcase for the captivating and charming actor portraying the central chocolatier. He enters a town dominated by a chocolate syndicate that seems willing to do anything to stop him from achieving his ambition. That aspiration? Ever since childhood, he’s wanted to create chocolate like his mother (Sally Hawkins) did. However, accomplishing this requires a shop – something impossible without even one silver coin. It's winter, so finding somewhere to sleep becomes his immediate priority. Fortunately (or not?!?) "Bleacher" (Tom Davis) discovers him on a cold bench and brings him to the kind hospitality of "Mrs. Scrubbit" (Olivia Colman), who offers him a place to stay for the night; although he quickly realizes it’s more like a bed in exchange for a lifetime of forced laundry work. Despite this, he remains resourceful and focused on his objective, so alongside his fellow prisoner "Noodle" (Calah Lane) and accountant "Abacus Crunch" (Jim Carter), they devise a strategy to get the town hooked on his sweets while simultaneously dismantling the evil group of chocolate manipulators and ensuring that “Scrubbit” and “Bleacher” face justice. Meanwhile, "Wonka" has another issue: someone is stealing his creations! A complicated setup and a large jar introduce us to a diminutive "Oompa-Loompa" (Hugh Grant) who appears to have spent far too much time tanning. With his own obligations to fulfill, the pair form an alliance that – well, we all know how those usually end up. It feels somewhat over-stylized, I believe, and the original musical numbers aren't particularly striking, but it moves at a brisk pace, and there’s no question that Chalamet seems to be having fun, which is somewhat infectious, leading us to an ending that pushes fondue to an absurd extreme... It boasts a strong and well-balanced supporting cast, and although perhaps a bit lengthy, I did find it enjoyable.
