A young man living in the Northeast (Lucas Till) finds out he’s a werewolf after something bad happens at his house, and he takes off on the road. Following advice from Lemmy (John Pyper-Ferguson), he winds up in Lupine Ridge, where he gets work on a farm and begins seeing a local bartender (Merritt Patterson). This doesn't sit well with the town’s wolfish leader (Jason Momoa). Stephen McHattie is there as the kind farmer who offers him guidance. “Wolves” (2014), an appropriately named werewolf movie, feels like it takes inspiration from the Marvel comic “Werewolf by Night.” The werewolves even look a bit like the versions drawn by Don Perlin. There are echoes of "The Howling" movies, but with noticeably better production than those later installments, and also some aspects similar to “Twilight” (2008) and “The Messengers” (2007). I’m sorry to bring up "Twilight," because it's sure to annoy a lot of people, but I mean the parts that worked well in that movie. The casting is good, there’s plenty of gore, some solid action sequences, attractive women, a nice soundtrack, and gorgeous Ontario locations with a great nighttime forest feel. It’s definitely very much influenced by comic books, but it's well-crafted for what it aims to be and provides exactly what you'd expect. I watched the version shown in theaters, though I’ve heard that the unrated cut is significantly better because it adds more explanation. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 31 minutes and was filmed in Ontario, around Toronto. GRADE: B+
