The story centers on a young woman experiencing hypertrichosis, and it unfolds within the context of a traveling freakshow, similar to the setting of “SideShow” from the year before. The narrative presents a teenager who is presented as a ferocious half-animal girl due to her excessive hair growth, requiring her to be kept in a cage. It’s primarily a coming-of-age story where Victoria Sanchez portrays the girl, experiencing both bullying because of her status as an outcast and also finding romance alongside some hope for a typical existence. Predictably, there are startling moments, including some that provide amusement, along with elements of horror. Sanchez is genuinely a striking woman to look at. Tim Curry delivers a solid performance as the show’s host and also portrays a father figure to the performers. Shelby Fenner and Shawn Ashmore appear as antagonists, but I didn't find their behavior convincing for the most part; it seemed contrived and could have been lessened. For example, the scene involving darts is hard to accept because it doesn't seem realistic—it’s unlikely that such an action would go unnoticed by anyone observing the main attraction. The film investigates the idea of appearing outwardly normal while harboring a sense of inner turmoil, as well as presenting someone with a beastly appearance who possesses a kind and gentle heart. While there are aspects to appreciate, including a captivating and inventive final act, “Candy Corn” from 2019 offers a more enjoyable experience within this genre.
