I’ve been attempting to introduce my fiancée and her friends to some older films—Taxi Driver, Chinatown, The Godfather, Goodfellas, The Princess Bride, and Blazing Saddles didn't go over well at all. Interestingly, Witness managed to appeal to them, which is remarkable considering how difficult it is to get this generation interested in anything created less than four years ago. It’s a noteworthy detail; I can’t quite explain why, but they did actually watch the whole thing. The screenplay is also exceptionally well-crafted, and that's high praise given its 1985 release, coming after nearly ten years of what are widely considered Hollywood’s finest films. It focuses entirely on the narrative, supported by strong performances and skillful direction, resulting in a truly impressive final product.
