Vincent Price gives an outstanding performance as the cruel and wicked "Matthew Hopkins," who during the English Civil War sets out to instill dread in the populace. He exploits common anxieties and beliefs, going from place to place to identify and punish those suspected of devil worship... A particularly striking moment occurs when he suggests that if a person thrown into a river with weights attached floats, they are guilty of witchcraft, while sinking indicates innocence—a demonstration of the era’s methods and unsettling perspectives, even among those considered learned. Ian Ogilvy portrays "Richard Marshall," a man trying to halt these injustices, placing himself and his family in danger, and we witness an intense conflict between them that rivals any military engagement. Certain scenes are quite disturbing, and the film's overall aesthetic significantly enhances the feeling of threat created by this truly sinister figure. Drawing inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe’s storytelling, it makes for a great viewing experience on a cold winter evening accompanied by red wine and the sound of wind against the window.
