This is a rather silly supernatural horror movie from the late 1980s that stars David Hasselhoff and Linda Blair. The story involves eight people who find themselves isolated on an island near Massachusetts, where a deserted hotel stands as home to the spirit of a German actress with apparent magical abilities. Among those present are David Hasselhoff, Linda Blair, Catherine Hickland, and Leslie Cumming. “Witchery,” released in 1988, is a made-for-video mystery/horror film that borrows from Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None," also known as “Ten Little Indians,” while echoing the aesthetic of inexpensive supernatural movies popular during the mid to late eighties, such as “Bay Coven.” Unfortunately, it doesn’t come anywhere near matching the quality of “Bay Coven.” The movie suffers from performances that are either poor or overly exaggerated, cheap-looking special effects, and a setting that lacks depth. The filmmakers seem to attempt to compensate for these shortcomings with scenes rated R, including an explicit non-consensual sexual assault involving Leslie Cumming (though some versions of the film have edited those parts out). Despite the limited budget, certain moments are genuinely effective, such as one older woman’s brutal capture, torture and death, and the later possession sequences. Catherine Hickland is visually striking; she was Hasselhoff's wife at the time of filming. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 35 minutes and was filmed in Scituate, Massachusetts (the hotel), along with the neighboring town of Cohasset. GRADE: C/C-
