This isn’t your typical genie story like the one Barbara Eden starred in. A malevolent djinn (played by Andrew Divoff) is unleashed in Los Angeles after being freed from a valuable gemstone, and he proceeds to bother people by granting their wishes. Tammy Lauren portrays Wendy Benson-Landes, the main character, alongside her sister and Robert Englund, who takes on the role of someone who collects objects with religious significance. “Wishmaster” (1997) is an original horror film inspired by comics, boasting a well-constructed story and a villain/monster that’s genuinely engaging—a refreshing change from what's often seen. The Djinn’s portrayal is excellent, possessing a devilish charm. Tammy Lauren brings to mind a younger Linda Hamilton; she’s easy to root for and energetic, though the part Wendy Benson-Landes plays feels underdeveloped. The movie suffers somewhat due to its cheap, flashy appearance and unremarkable supporting actors, but it manages to be entertaining with its amusingly gruesome effects, enjoyable cameo appearances, and an unusual premise. As of 2002, it led to three sequels being made. The film’s length is 1 hour, 30 minutes, and filming took place in Los Angeles. GRADE: B-
