As her grandfather approaches his hundredth birthday, the spirited young Asha is eager to persuade the King—the guardian of all the wishes from the island’s inhabitants—to fulfill a wish he had long since forgotten. Simultaneously, the King needs an assistant, and she finds herself considered for the position. Seeing this as an opportunity to address both matters at once, she presents her case before him, prematurely asking that he grant her grandfather's desire. The King's evasiveness makes one suspect something isn’t right—is the seemingly kind ruler truly what he appears to be? Feeling rejected, Asha impulsively makes a wish of her own, directing it toward a star. This star then descends from the sky to aid her in freeing all the suppressed wishes and liberating the kingdom from its increasingly threatening leader... The animation is passable, but the narrative feels underdeveloped, with characters who fail to truly capture the imagination—with the possible exception of the goat, Valentino, who provides most of the limited humor found within the sincere screenplay. “The Wish” incorporates musical cues reminiscent of familiar melodies, striving toward a final rendition of Leigh Harline's classic Disney theme "When You Wish Upon a Star." It’s a blend of various narratives and will likely amuse younger viewers initially. However, older audiences may find it lacking, and I doubt it will endure for very long into the studio’s future years.
