This unsettling drama features some genuinely convincing portrayals. The story centers on "Ree" (Jennifer Lawrence), whose world is disrupted when her father puts their home, situated in the mountains, up as security for a bail bond and then disappears. This leaves "Ree" struggling, especially considering she’s also responsible for her mother, who suffers from depression, and her younger siblings. She discovers he's entangled with a local meth operation that is apparently quite profitable, meaning they could face eviction and the family’s limited funds have vanished along with him. Fortunately, their neighbor "Sonya" (Shelley Waggener) offers assistance, but “Ree” still needs to locate "Jessup," which will require confronting her uncle "Teardrop" (John Hawkes), someone she greatly fears. When it seems he may be deceased or has left the area, a sense of urgency arises, and navigating the rugged Ozark landscape becomes difficult as she tries to find him. While the narrative isn't groundbreaking, Lawrence and Hawkes both give noteworthy performances, and the beautiful cinematography set against the backdrop of old-growth forests—accompanied by some inventive sound design and a score that creates an atmosphere of threat—all contribute to a powerful finale. The film doesn’t necessarily showcase the best aspects of this rural community; it seems moonshine production has been surpassed by something more valuable, and those involved in producing and distributing this drug are willing to do whatever it takes to protect their operation, with little regard for morality.
