Paul Kircher does a commendable job portraying the vulnerability of his character, Lucas. The story finds him living with his parents, Juliet Binoche and Christophe Honoré, until a tragic event claims his father's life. His brother, Quentin, played by Vincent Lacoste, returns from Paris, and the family begins the difficult process of dealing with their shared grief. This sorrow surfaces in various ways among them, creating tension as well. It’s Quentin who suggests taking Lucas, then seventeen years old, to the city for a change of scenery, and so they embark on this journey. He shares a small apartment with Lilio (Erwan Kepoa Falé), whom Lucas quickly becomes attracted to. We are already aware that Lucas is gay, and his time in the city provides an opportunity to experience cultural attractions and explore dating apps. Throughout the narrative, occasional flashbacks reveal Lucas’s ongoing struggle to process his loss, leading him to become increasingly self-centered and withdrawn; impulsive and inconsiderate, and somewhat critical of the burden he places on his family. A minor transgression (involving 150 Euros) results in his brother sending him back home, which escalates the situation considerably and shocks everyone involved. Reality forces the family to confront their circumstances—hopefully setting Lucas on a course toward a more positive future. Binoche has limited screen time, but her expressions effectively communicate a range of emotions – sadness, grief, frustration, or affection; and there’s an evident sense of love within this family unit. Lacoste also delivers a solid performance as Quentin navigates the demands of his own life alongside those of his family—a challenging task when his teenage brother is drawn to a flatmate who is ten years older. Kircher, however, truly shines. There's a palpable confidence in his acting that’s captivating to watch; he earns sympathy but also provokes a desire to reprimand him at times. His actions aren't malicious, nor are they an over-the-top "cry for help." Instead, it's about the depth of his sorrow, sadness, and the emptiness surrounding them, along with the bitterness of those feelings. It’s surprising to see people still wear turquoise underwear! Perhaps a bit lengthy, but I suspect this actor will be around for quite some time.
