This film has earned my appreciation for several reasons. I wouldn’t describe it as intricate; however, its execution is skillful. The narrative unfolds on a Native American Reservation located in Wyoming. The landscape possesses a stark beauty. Winter conditions there are severe and unrelenting. Given my fondness for the outdoors and an admiration for the resilient, solitary existence of people living away from mainstream society, I found myself engaged with this film right away. The performers deliver strong performances; the acting is also commendable. I don’t require unexpected plot developments or a dramatic resolution in a detective-style story to appreciate it, so the lack of those elements didn't detract from my enjoyment. It’s the qualities that distinguish this movie which ultimately enhance its appeal for me. I’m frankly weary of “action/mystery” movies and their predictable structures and methods: the quick changes in camera angles designed to mimic fighting sequences, the car stunts reminiscent of the 1970s accompanied by loud music, and so on. The portrayal of corporations, religious leaders, and those with traditional values as antagonists has become tiresome due to its repetitive nature. This film stands apart from that trend. The plot centers around the violent death of a young Native American woman and the disappearance of her boyfriend. We witness the efforts of a small group of dedicated, overburdened law enforcement officials striving to solve the crime and ensure accountability, along with a civilian tracker brought in to assist them. The film avoids promoting any covert or obvious viewpoints. At its core, it’s simply a story set in the contemporary West, exploring themes of human behavior, criminality, and fairness.
