Some people in film criticism will undoubtedly consider themselves above a movie as silly as “Willy’s Wonderland,” dismissing it as an over-the-top, entertaining popcorn film with an 80s slasher feel. This feels like a movie specifically created for those who enjoy horror comedies, and its interesting concept, strong protagonist, and nostalgic grindhouse style seem destined to make it a late-night cult favorite. A man who prefers solitude finds himself stuck in a small town after his car breaks down. Unable to afford the repairs, he agrees to clean up Willy’s Wonderland, an abandoned family fun center, for the night. Unbeknownst to him, he's signed on as the janitor of a place rumored to be haunted. The town has been troubled ever since stories about missing children and evil animatronics began circulating. As time passes that evening, he realizes the large, furry mascots are alive and have their own intentions, forcing him to fight for his survival. The narrative is well-constructed; if you’re willing to put aside your doubts, it's surprisingly believable. There are supernatural elements and plenty of humor, and the Janitor is precisely the horror hero audiences didn’t realize they needed. Kevin Lewis demonstrates a talent for directing, intuitively understanding what viewers want to see and delivering it effectively. The film moves along at a good pace. It concludes with a suggestion of a possible sequel, which I would really like to see. “Rad” is the best word I can think of to describe this movie, and it’s fitting in almost any discussion about it. The wonderfully primitive puppet costumes for Willy the Weasel and his group of murderous companions (including Tito the Turtle, Siren Sara, Ozzie the Ostrich, and Knighty Knight) are laugh-out-loud funny, a great match for the equally amusing low-budget horror effects. Even better is Cage’s performance, which brings something special to his role as a soda-drinking, pinball-loving man of few words (the actor doesn't have any lines in the film). This isn’t meant to be taken seriously, and that’s part of what makes it enjoyable. “Willy’s Wonderland” is a lot of bloody fun, particularly if you want to see Nic Cage fighting possessed animatronics. And honestly, don’t we all?
