Warwick Davis' movie about his life isn’t exactly great, but it also doesn’t fall into the category of truly bad films. Fantasy movies have had their shining moments because of talented directors and writers, and due to what technology can offer. However, things used to be different: the people working on fantasy films back then were often skilled at improvising and coming up with creative solutions. That kind of ingenuity is a real asset, and sometimes it’s better than relying on computer-generated imagery that looks so obviously fake it's hard to take seriously. While this film isn’t exceptional or deserving of high praise, it’s not a complete loss, and there are aspects worth appreciating. The movie gains some significance from the involvement of several well-known figures in the film industry at the time: a script by George Lucas and direction by Ron Howard prevent it from being considered a low-budget production. Howard's directing is solid, but Lucas could have put more work into the screenplay; the story has amusing parts and good moments, but also relies heavily on familiar tropes and odd details that constantly raise questions. Despite the promotional focus on Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley (which makes sense given their fame), Warwick Davis is really the central figure. His performance isn’t award-worthy, of course, but he couldn't have done much better; he was young and lacked experience, yet still demonstrated talent and determination, making the most of this incredible opportunity that came his way. Kilmer doesn’t need to stretch himself very far, while Whalley and Jean Marsh are both memorable and deliver satisfying performances. From a technical standpoint, the film's strengths lie in its well-crafted sets and costumes, as well as the soundtrack, which is skillfully composed even if it isn't particularly striking. It includes several special effects that are noticeably dated but still work for their purpose. The issue is that, for a fantasy movie, it lacks some of the "magic" you’d hope for. And although the story can be somewhat confusing, the film moves along at a decent speed, so this doesn't become a major problem.
