Warwick Davis provides a wonderful performance in this fantasy film about the man who must protect a baby from the malevolent queen Bavmorda, portrayed by Jean Marsh. Prophecy dictates that this infant will eventually end the queen’s oppressive rule, making his mission fraught with danger. When he reaches a certain point, the people assisting him desert him and his goal, but luckily he finds help in Madmartigan, played by Val Kilmer, who had been imprisoned and left for dead. As he is chased by Sorsha, the queen’s fierce daughter (Joanne Whalley), along with her assistant Kael (Pat Roach), a thrilling adventure unfolds, complete with impressive special effects, an appealing narrative, and well-developed characters presenting a classic struggle between good and evil. I typically find myself rooting for the antagonists in films, but Willow's bravery and integrity almost convinced me to change my allegiance. Kilmer is excellent; his part gives him opportunities for clever lines and plenty of action as the final act—and a magical one at that—approaches. Ron Howard and George Lucas allowed their imaginations to run free, and I believe it was successful. The visuals and fight sequences are well-executed, and while the plot may borrow elements from other stories, it remains an entertaining David versus Goliath conflict featuring memorable supporting actors, recognizable faces, and, in my opinion, improves over time.
