It’s unusual to hear someone so unenthusiastically proclaim "We are Swiss," and that pretty much captures how disappointing Claes Bang is as the central figure in this lengthy, drawn-out story about crossbows. Having endured hardship during the Crusade, he's not initially inclined toward rebellion but prefers a quiet life with his family. After intervening to save someone whose wife was brutally assaulted and killed by Austrian soldiers led by the King (Sir Ben Kingsley), his former bravery returns, unleashing chaos on those around him who are unprepared for it. Hunted by the deranged "Gessler" (Connor Swindell) and his blond sidekick "Stussi" (Jake Dunn), he must relearn how to use a bow and arrow, including that well-known moment involving an apple and a boy’s head! The film includes some beautiful shots of the Alps alongside noticeably artificial computer effects. It's true that there are many action sequences where Tell and his growing group demonstrate their ability to leave their enemies as lifeless bodies. Sir Ben Kingsley seems to have borrowed his eye patch from "The Last Legion" (2007), but like Sir Jonathan Pryce, he doesn’t appear enough to contribute much beyond a touch of theatrical importance to what is otherwise a rather dull and lifeless historical account. The characters lack personality in this movie, and the lengthy conversations, along with the generally unengaging performances from almost everyone except Dunn—who resembles a less imposing version of "Stamper" from "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997)—don’t really connect with the audience. While there's clear care given to things like costumes and castle sets, the film feels about thirty minutes too long and concludes abruptly, suggesting it wants to be part of a series.
