It's rare for movies to really focus on friendship, and it’s a subject deserving of more attention because it’s something everyone can connect with. When films tackle interesting examples of this bond, they often become truly special, which is certainly the case with Josh Greenbaum’s newest documentary. It’s structured as a road trip movie centered around the relationship between Will Ferrell and Harper Steele. These friends had known each other for years, having first worked together at Saturday Night Live. Back then, Harper was Andrew, but he'd been privately considering transitioning to become a woman. After keeping this significant part of himself hidden for quite some time, in 2020, Andrew shared his decision to transition and become Harper with Ferrell and other people close to him. While the news understandably took Ferrell by surprise, given their long friendship, he was naturally supportive. At the same time, he wondered how such a change would affect their connection; they’d always enjoyed doing traditionally “masculine” things together, but could that continue now? To find out, they decided to take a 16-day road trip from New York to Los Angeles, with several stops along the way. This journey offered them a chance to see how they would navigate their relationship in this new situation and allowed Harper to assess whether she could still feel comfortable participating in activities she’d previously enjoyed as a man. The film is a thoughtful and moving look at rediscovering a friend within an old connection, showing how things can evolve while remaining essentially the same. Along the way, Will and Harper connect with family members, mutual friends, people they've just met, transgender advocates, and former colleagues like Tina Fey, Tim Meadows, Kristin Wiig, and Lorne Michaels. The documentary also explores the different reactions and levels of acceptance that transgender individuals experience as they move forward, some encouraging and others difficult and often unexpected. “Will & Harper” is a sincere tribute to friendship, filled with moments that are touching, emotional, humorous, goofy, and revealing—much like the relationships between longtime friends. Just because things change doesn't mean everything else has to; that’s what true friendships should be about.
