This film tells a quiet, poignant story against the backdrop of beautiful Alaska. After her mother begins treatment, fourteen-year-old Mackenzie is sent to live with her deceased father’s brother—simply called “Uncle”—in Juneau. From the start, Mackenzie seems uncomfortable around him, even as he attempts to connect with her by buying a smartphone. When he oversteps a boundary, she feels compelled to flee and try to return to Seattle. However, she finds herself unable to reach her mother and without resources to make the trip home. She then begins following Rene Bartlett, a solitary backpacker, hoping he will assist her in getting back. Bartlett, still mourning the recent death of his wife, is initially unwilling to take responsibility for the teenager who won't disclose why she ran away. Yet, he can’t ignore that Mackenzie is alone in Denali Park with no supplies, so they begin traveling together. It’s within this expansive, silent, and gorgeous wilderness that both Mackenzie and Bartlett start to find solace from their pain, gradually building a sense of reliance on one another. For Mackenzie, Bartlett becomes the father figure she needs, particularly given her difficult experience with her uncle. And Mackenzie offers him an opportunity to move beyond his grief. Throughout the story, Mackenzie is troubled by persistent messages and calls from her uncle, who attempts to manipulate her into returning home. Their paths are destined to converge as he searches for her. At its heart, this is a story about Mackenzie and Bartlett’s journey toward healing within a setting that seems to overshadow their difficulties.
