The film largely succeeds thanks to Ed Axenbould’s performance as the adolescent “Joe.” His ordinary existence is disrupted when his father "Jerry," portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal, loses his job. Facing financial difficulties alongside his wife "Jeanette" (Carey Mulligan), he accepts a position located some distance away, a choice that causes his wife to feel deserted. The boy now has to navigate his mother’s unconventional ways of managing stress while also dealing with his own emotions regarding both parents; he clearly cherishes his father. It's true that the narrative doesn't involve much action—it primarily functions as a subtle examination of how bonds weaken when the stability of a family is threatened. Axenbould provides a confident portrayal, although some attention to his hair would be beneficial, and Mulligan also performs admirably, along with her affluent acquaintance Bill Camp ("Miller"), whose intentions remain unclear throughout. The story highlights the insular nature of small-town life, as well as the limited options available; and when the couple separates for practical reasons, it underscores how fragile even seemingly strong relationships can become under duress. Gyllenhaal’s contribution is minimal once again, but the other two actors are quite good.
