Wuchak on Wild Wild West

8/10 · Aug 28, 2025

This film has to be among the most talked-about movies ever released. Coming out in 1999, it's a send-up of the late-60s television program featuring Will Smith as the lead, which should give viewers a clue that it’s not intended to be taken literally (though the original TV show wasn’t exactly known for its seriousness either, just slightly more so than this film). Kevin Kline portrays James West's unwilling sidekick and is skilled at using gadgets. Some people have voiced concerns about the leads’ on-screen connection, but I believe that criticism is misguided. Those complaining don’t seem to understand that these characters aren’t meant to get along. As far as I'm concerned, Smith and Kline form an amusing duo and are well-suited for this cinematic spoof. Kenneth Branagh and Ted Levine also appear in villainous roles, but it's the spirited, small Salma Hayek who takes home the award for best supporting performance. This is only the second film of hers that I’ve seen, and she truly stands out. I don’t understand what those griping are upset about, unless they were die-hard fans of the TV show hoping for a faithful adaptation. "Wild Wild West" is an upbeat, silly spoof with all the expected elements of a big-budget movie, like 1999's "The Mummy" and 2004’s “Van Helsing.” I refer to these kinds of movies as "big dumb fun" because they aren’t meant to be analyzed too closely; they're "Summer blockbusters" made purely to entertain. Understanding this will help you enjoy “Wild Wild West.” Just switch off your critical thinking and have a good time with the vibrant story. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 45 minutes, and filming took place in California, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, and Idaho. GRADE: A-/B+
