I found this to be an enjoyable experience. It’s certainly a strange movie, but surprisingly effective, at least in my view—the steampunk aesthetic definitely contributes to that. Will Smith and Kevin Kline make for a solid team as West and Gordon. Kenneth Branagh's portrayal of Arliss is funny, and I liked the look of his character’s costume too. I will admit the visual effects surrounding Smith and Kline haven't held up well over time, but everything else still looks pretty good. I especially enjoyed the scenes involving the train. Salma Hayek as Rita feels rather unnecessary; she seems to be present mainly for suggestive imagery. The film also attempts to incorporate a (presumably intended as uplifting) message about prejudice and similar issues, which feels out of place and isn't explored very thoroughly. *Wild Wild West* shines when it’s simply trying to be funny. It’s not exactly intellectually stimulating viewing. I would suggest watching it—though many others probably wouldn’t agree with me.
