Barry Sonnenfeld's Wild Wild West is something I’ve steered clear of for well over fifteen years. While I enjoy Westerns, and I wasn’t familiar with the original stories, it wasn't the negative reviews or my lack of background that kept me away—it was those initial trailers; they suggested a confused, excessively expensive production, which, to be fair, is largely what it turned out to be. That being said, there are moments of enjoyment to be found. Despite its numerous flaws – underwhelming effects, a weak screenplay, an underutilization of talented actors, and a lack of depth—the film possesses energy and charm, along with Will Smith’s charisma and some impressive inventions. Going in with minimal expectations probably helped me appreciate it more than I otherwise would have; I wouldn't go so far as to label it a complete disaster. My advice is to relax with a drink, crank up the sound system, and just go along for the ride, because overanalyzing things might lead to frustration... It earns a 5/10 from me.
