Steve McQueen, who directed 12 Years a Slave, and Gillian Flynn, known for Gone Girl, teamed up to write the script for this very gripping crime thriller featuring Viola Davis. Just those three names would be enough to get me in a movie theater, but it turns out there’s even more to like: the story, adapted from Lynda La Plante’s novel, centers on four women who find themselves on a perilous journey after their husbands—who were not exactly honest men—die. Widows has an enormous cast, including Daniel Kaluuya, Michelle Rodriguez, Jacki Weaver, Colin Farrell, and Liam Neeson. It's kind of like Good Girls mixed with Ocean’s 11, except the humor is gone, and instead you get Viola Davis looking intensely sad while gazing into the distance (which seems pretty dark).
