Haley Bennett delivers an adequate performance as the woman who must manage her deceased husband’s vineyards during a turbulent historical period when Napoleon’s conflicts were sweeping across Europe—a time when France was facing considerable difficulties—and legal restrictions prevented women from even overseeing something as simple as a dinner gathering. Following François's (Tom Sturridge) passing, she inherits property that his former father-in-law Philippe (Ben Miles) is eager to transfer to the neighboring Mr. Moet. However, with assistance from accountant "Edouard" (Anson Boon) and distributor "Droite" (Paul Rhys), she’s resolved to establish her own Champagne brand and, perhaps even more dangerously, get the product to affluent buyers willing to pay a premium for wine boasting what are described as “frog-eyed bubbles.” The foundation exists for an engaging narrative centered on the challenges faced by a woman—and a father—as they grapple with unexpected loss within a wartime setting. We do gain some insight, through flashbacks, revealing that her marriage was initially affectionate but that her husband’s mental health deteriorated, placing significant strain on both her and their young daughter; however, this exploration is diminished by Sturridge's typically unremarkable acting and somewhat flimsy storytelling. The film is visually appealing and effectively portrays the hurdles involved in cultivating the vintage before bottling these potentially volatile containers and transporting them to market via wagon. Bryce Dessner’s score contributes significantly to the atmosphere as well, but director Thomas Napper seems to have prioritized the visual elements over developing the personalities of a woman who clearly possessed strong convictions and wouldn't allow her husband's legacy to fade—even if it meant financial ruin. It’s acceptable enough for viewing, though seeing it in theaters doesn’t noticeably enhance this underdeveloped historical drama that ultimately felt lacking in vibrancy.
