I really wanted to dislike it. The choice to divide the musical into a pair of movies didn't appeal to me, nor did the casting choices. I intensely disliked the preview, which made the movie seem artificial with its shiny, computer-generated imagery—or even something worse produced by artificial intelligence. However, my assumptions were incorrect. Erivo and Grande are fantastic. The supporting actors weren’t who I would have chosen, but they perform remarkably well. Especially those portraying Bok and Nessa. The film is wonderful, lovely, and full of happiness in many respects. When Elphaba takes flight, so did my emotions, and I felt tears welling up. I also valued how it acknowledges the considerably darker tone of the original novel—particularly with the propaganda posters and dummy figure at the beginning, along with several allusions to Oz’s conquest. Like that moment when a stone section breaks away from the school building, exposing the animals hidden underneath. My sole criticism is that, as is often the case with stories split into multiple installments, much of what's included feels unnecessary and drags things down. This is particularly noticeable during "Dancing Through Life," which becomes excessively lengthy and loses some of its enchantment due to the added material. Despite this, I wholeheartedly suggest seeing it. 8/10 Stars.
