I thought 'Wicked' was very enjoyable. It’s remarkable how quickly a lengthy movie can pass when it’s genuinely engaging—a clear indication of solid storytelling. This one runs for 2 hours and 40 minutes, and I anticipated feeling its length, but surprisingly, I didn’t. Since I started posting reviews online, I've developed a greater appreciation for musicals; now, knowing a film belongs to that genre doesn't really register with me. I hadn't encountered the stage production before, and my only prior knowledge was that it takes place within the universe of 'The Wizard of Oz'—which I’m familiar with through the films from 1939 and 2013, among a couple of other movies. Because of this, I wasn’t entirely certain where they were planning to take the story concerning the Wicked Witch of the West, but I found it agreeable. Cynthia Erivo delivers an impressive performance as that character. However, Ariana Grande was the one who truly stood out for me onscreen. She does a wonderful job portraying her character's self-absorbed personality traits while also creating some genuinely funny moments. Jonathan Bailey and Peter Dinklage are both good in their roles, and Jeff Goldblum seems well-suited to his part. The conclusion felt somewhat hurried or abrupt, though that’s understandable considering it’s only the first of two parts. That's fairly common for films divided into multiple installments, really. I am curious about where the second installment will lead; I look forward to seeing it this time next year. The music is, as you’d anticipate, also a plus. While I don’t imagine adding any of the songs to my personal playlist, I still had an enjoyable experience listening to them—none are particularly jarring or out of place, which is good. Otherwise, visually and in terms of plot, I have few criticisms.
