"White Rabbit," released in 2013, is a somber coming-of-age film characterized by its raw depiction of life and artistic touches. Some have drawn parallels to “Donnie Darko,” but that movie incorporated science fiction elements within a high school setting, whereas "White Rabbit" maintains a sense of everyday familiarity and seriousness—not to mention an atmosphere of brooding intensity. Furthermore, “Donnie” was essentially a major studio production, while this film’s budget was only $2 million. Fans of independent films such as "Cutback" (2010) and "Love Everlasting" (2016), or more mainstream movies like "The Rage: Carrie 2,” should find something to enjoy here. The conclusion avoids a softened resolution, instead echoing the merits of “Speck” (2002). Fortunately, despite its darkness, the film includes a moment of hope.
