I honestly didn’t think 2023's *White Men Can’t Jump* would be very good! I figured we were looking at just another average remake of the enjoyable film from 1992, which is what usually happens. But it turns out everyone involved did a really nice job; I genuinely liked this one, and it’s mostly funny with some real emotional depth too. In fact, I'd even put it above the original movie. The earlier version—which was entertaining in its own right—is good overall, but Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson really made it stand out. This time around, the main actors aren’t quite as impactful (though they are still very good), but the film feels more complete and interesting because of other elements. It doesn't have that same dynamic like Snipes and Harrelson did, but Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow work really well together. I hadn’t seen Walls act before, and I was impressed, especially during that emotional scene with Lance Reddick. This is Harlow’s first acting role, and he's surprisingly good; you can tell in a few places that he isn’t an experienced actor, but mostly he seems believable. Teyana Taylor, Laura Harrier, Myles Bullock, and Vince Staples are also great additions to the cast, with the last two providing some amusing comic relief. It was fun to spot Gerald Johnson too, even though his part was small... *Lamar 🐐*. They assembled a really solid group of actors, all in all. I wasn’t expecting it to be as funny as it turned out to be; I didn't laugh out loud at any point, but I was smiling and chuckling almost constantly. As you might expect, it leans heavily on jokes about race, but they are handled well. The music choices are also good.
