The narrative unfolds around a complex situation within a charmingly sentimental depiction of countryside life in England during the late 1950s. Three children reside on a farm alongside their father, who is a widower and somewhat detached but not uncaring; along with their aunt "Dolly" and "Eddie," who serves as the farm's all-purpose helper. The youngsters hide a group of kittens around the property, seeking divine intervention to ensure their safety. During one of their checkups, they find a vulnerable young man (Alan Bates) in the barn and mistakenly believe him to be Jesus—even going so far as to offer him bread and wine and shielding him from adults who might inflict a similar destiny upon him as was experienced in his prior existence. He is, of course, not Jesus, but rather holds a more troubling secret; however, the children’s sincere and compassionate behavior – which some might describe as innocent – is beautifully portrayed by the actresses under director Bryan Forbes' skilled guidance, particularly the gentle, pure connection between Bates and "Kathy" (Hayley Mills).
