J K Simmons received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor portraying a harsh, intimidating figure. His character, Terence Fletcher, a jazz instructor, actively disdains praise like "good job," believing it signifies a lack of ambition. Fletcher recounts the story of Charlie Parker, illustrating that simply performing well isn’t sufficient for true achievement; in his view, it leads to being average. Ironically, Fletcher himself appears to be an unremarkable teacher, and the institution he works at seems oblivious to this failing. Rather than inspiring his students, he instills fear. He's a cruel dictator, and past events resurface to trouble him. Miles Teller embodies Andrew Neiman, a jazz drummer attending the Shaffer Conservatory in New York who desperately wants Fletcher’s approval. However, no matter what Neiman does, it isn’t satisfactory, and he endures relentless criticism until he eventually reaches his breaking point. Damien Chazelle created a questionable character in Fletcher, with Neiman serving as the film's emotional core, but I don’t feel this is a successful movie. The other students in the class remain passive witnesses to the abuse happening before their eyes; they are adults, not children, and take no action.
