It’s definitely worth watching again, and I feel comfortable suggesting it to others. I recognize some of the Austin locations featured, including that roller rink—it really is an impressive place with a palpable atmosphere. I've grown tired of scenes involving pageantry; they tend to be dull, so perhaps using one to begin this film was inspired. It’s a familiar “I don’t want your life” setup, but establishing the story in that way allows for a genuine exploration of personal development—a journey toward self-discovery (though it's not precisely a coming-of-age tale). When something captures our attention, even if it's just an odd flyer or a pair of skates, we should take notice; the smaller the thing that draws you in, the more important it is to pay attention. Roller derby seems like a fantastic sport, and while fame or conventional success might not come from it, it looks enjoyable, and I’m sure those who participate love it. Though the roller derby scenes are well done, and the romantic storylines work well, as does the dynamic with the best friend—I'm just now realizing how many different threads this movie has—it’s truly the self-discovery and Bliss’s character arc that stand out (thanks to Ellen Page’s compelling performance). She goes from being someone who struggles to be heard to a person capable of demanding what she wants, delivering a hit, and becoming an icon. The film actually makes me feel a bit jealous: while I'd like to be an attractive, strong woman, finding a passion you can still enjoy, connecting with people who support that passion, and then competing against those older than you is remarkable in itself. I’ll never participate in roller derby myself, but I know I can always experience it through this movie.
