The film centers on Dixon, portrayed by Dana Andrews, a police officer who operates outside established procedures, which creates friction with his bosses and results in his demotion—a contrast to his colleague Thomas, played by Karl Malden, who is promoted to lieutenant. This internal conflict within the police force occurs while criminal mastermind Scalise, acted by Gary Merrill, plans to swindle wealthy Morrison during a dice game. The situation escalates quickly, leaving them with a murder to investigate. Dixon’s tendency to rely on physical confrontation during investigations leads him into personal hardship, further complicated by his growing feelings for Morgan, portrayed by Gene Tierney, who is a widow deeply involved in the unfolding events. The audience is privy to the identities of those responsible and their actions, and part of what makes the film effective is Otto Preminger’s technique of presenting the narrative as an observation of how the characters piece together the truth. It depicts a world of violence within a violent city, prompting reflection on whether the methods used were ultimately justifiable as the pursuit reaches its intense conclusion. While no single performer delivers a particularly memorable performance, I believe this actually enhances the feeling of collaboration present among both the police force and the criminal organization. The dialogue is restrained enough to allow the frequent action sequences to carry much of the narrative weight. There's a certain rawness that contributes to the story’s believability as it explores themes of minor crime and brutality, and I found it an enjoyable experience overall.
