WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING brings Delia Owens’s novel to the screen. The story unfolds in the early 1950s within the made-up town of Barkley Cove, North Carolina. Kya Clark, portrayed by Daisy Edgar-Jones, is a young woman who lives apart from others after being left by her family. She develops a friendship with Tate Walker (played by Taylor John Smith), a local boy who assists her in learning to read and write. Following his departure, Kya becomes romantically involved with Chase Andrews (played by Harris Dickinson), the town’s most popular young man. When Chase is discovered dead, suspicion falls on Kya. The film opens with the murder, differing from how the book presents events. The movie begins with Kya's arrest and trial, which becomes a primary focus, unlike in the novel where it serves as a less important element of the story. While the filmmakers manage to translate the book’s complicated plot and characters to film reasonably well, it lacks the poetic writing style that is one of the novel's best qualities. Daisy Edgar-Jones delivers a noteworthy performance as Kya, effectively portraying her feelings of isolation, desperation, and hope. The movie is worth seeing for her acting alone. Visually, the film is quite impressive, featuring expansive views of the North Carolina marshes – a gorgeous setting for the story. Beyond her relationships with the two men in her life, Kya also finds friendship with Jumpin' (played by Sterling Macer Jr) and Mabel (played by Michael Hyatt), and their connection proves to be one of the most intricate and engaging aspects of the movie. WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING isn’t without its problems. The film’s rhythm feels inconsistent, and it struggles at times to establish a consistent tone. The mystery surrounding Chase's death is overly complicated and not particularly captivating. Also, Kya and Chase’s relationship doesn’t feel natural or believable. It’s also strange that the movie never explains what a crawdad actually is! Apparently, they are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters, sometimes called crayfish, crawfish, or crawdaddies. They inhabit swamps, struggling to survive – an image representing Kya's own fight for survival. The film explores themes of love, loss, betrayal, and eventual recovery. Kya’s story is a poignant account of how people can endure hardship. The conclusion offers a sense of hope, even though it includes tragic elements. WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING is a beautiful but imperfect adaptation of a well-regarded book. It's worth watching for the striking visuals and Daisy Edgar-Jones’s performance. However, those expecting a completely accurate version of the novel may be let down.
