The saying that suggests a world governed by mothers would be free from conflict has inspired a film! It’s a genuinely funny and imaginative work, with a playful tone, reflecting present-day issues in the Middle East, and also quite moving. I appreciated the director's decisions, which establish a deliberately simple and raw feel for the story. This is my third movie by Labaki, and it's clear why this Lebanese filmmaker has been winning so many awards at film festivals (42 wins, 37 nominations). Here, she critiques religious extremism—and with good reason, as it seems to be behind most conflicts.
