This is a really good documentary about The Doors. Released in 2009, "The Doors: When You're Strange" was written and directed by Tom DiCillo, and it chronicles the band’s journey from 1966 to 1971, with narration provided by Johnny Depp. Throughout its duration, the film incorporates historical video clips and photographs of the group, highlighting the contributions of Ray Manzarek (keyboard), Robby Krieger (guitar), John Densmore (drums), and particularly Jim Morrison (vocals/lyrics). I’ve only watched two documentaries about The Doors—the one included with Oliver Stone's "The Doors" DVD from 1991, which includes recent interviews with the band members and people connected to them, like a former girlfriend of Morrison’s who disliked the film—and this one. Both are quite good, but “The Doors: When You’re Strange” avoids using present-day interviews, although some prominent figures do get asked questions in the older footage. From start to finish, the documentary is captivating and includes 37 songs from the legendary band. Depp turns out to be a surprisingly effective narrator; he doesn't come across as silly at all. Even if you already know about The Doors, you’ll likely pick up some new details. For example, it’s unusual that the group never had a bass player, although Elvis Presley’s bassist did contribute to their final album; Manzarek compensated for this by essentially playing bass lines with one hand. By the way, Manzarek died in May 2013 at age 74. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 25 minutes. GRADE: A
