The pairing of the grasping “Spangler” (James Franciscus) with wealthy “Shelby” (William Holden) to develop a high-end resort on an island also leads him to enlist oil man “Hank” (Paul Newman), hoping he can add even more profit to their venture. Surprisingly, they do find oil—but this seasoned driller worries because the pressure readings are unusually high and there’s a chance that a nearby volcano could erupt. Complicating matters is “Kay” (Jacqueline Bisset), who shares a past romantic connection with “Hank,” a relationship as intense as the potential volcanic activity on their island paradise. Irwin Allen was responsible for some truly remarkable disaster films, but in this case, it feels like he gathered a strong cast and then neglected to properly develop the narrative. The film brought to mind “The Poseidon Adventure” (1972), with Burgess Meredith, Eddie Albert, a notably poor performance from Red Buttons, and Valentina Cortese doing her best Shelley Winters impression from that seafaring disaster—all seemingly seeking a vacation with a paycheck at the end. While some of the volcanic effects are striking, and there's one moment where Meredith and Newman generate a flicker of suspense, for the most part, despite its fiery subject matter, it’s all rather thin. The disaster movie genre had run its course by this point, and this film simply accelerated its demise.
