“When The Wind Blows” depicts a devastating aftermath of a nuclear attack on Britain, and it's truly awful to witness. Adapted from Raymond Briggs’ book—the same author who created “The Snowman”—this film conveys the full extent of what an elderly couple goes through after missiles land. The movie begins with authentic Cold War footage set to David Bowie’s unsettling theme music, and its animation style is reminiscent of Briggs' other well-known projects ("The Snowman," "The Snowman and the Snow Dog"). The story’s grim tone might seem odd for this type of animation, but it actually fits very well. It's deeply saddening to see the two main characters naively attempt to follow government instructions while holding onto the hope that their peaceful village will eventually return to what it was. You can’t help but feel sympathy for Jim and Hilda as they gradually weaken from radiation sickness and come to terms with how much has changed in the world around them. A particularly smart touch is the way the story includes the official United Kingdom protect and survive leaflet that the government distributed years ago. This adds a sense of authenticity, since Jim and Hilda are following those instructions, completely oblivious to how ridiculous and terrible their situation really is. The writing is excellent, and the animation enhances the narrative, making the story feel especially troubling even now, as it did back in 1986.
