Reno on When the Game Stands Tall

6/10 · Aug 4, 2016

The narrative draws from the actual experiences of an American high school football coach and his team during the 2004 season. It details the setbacks and recoveries of a team known for its impressive winning streak, which abruptly ended. The movie depicts how players might lose faith, how the coach could seem lost, how parents react, and how the media adds to the pressure—all presented in a straightforward manner. I found it pleasant enough and enjoyed watching it, but felt that it ran on too long and didn’t have the same motivational impact as other sports films based on true stories. Coming from the director of 'Coach Carter,' this is another acceptable sports movie. I wasn't let down because my expectations weren't particularly high; it isn't a terrible film for a single viewing. The acting was solid across the board, and Jim Caviezel has a significant role that he performs exceptionally well. American football has never really held my interest as an American sport, except when I watch films about it to get inspired. My enthusiasm diminished even further after seeing 'Concussion.' My comments shouldn’t be taken as a reason to avoid the film. As a movie, it successfully brings real-life accomplishments to the screen with the intention of encouraging young athletes. For me personally, it was merely above average, but for many others, it may rank among the best sports films of the year. Setting aside the football aspect, what resonated with me was the idea that while achievements can lead to progress and a career, there’s often something more valuable than simply breaking records. Ultimately, it offers a worthwhile moral lesson rather than being purely entertaining. I wouldn't necessarily suggest seeing it, but it isn't a regrettable use of time either. 6.5/10
