Finding encouragement is an effective way to overcome anxieties. I selected this after watching Jannete Oke's 'Love Comes Softly' movie series. It’s certainly another impressive work from her, but it was disappointing to see it as a standalone film. The western-drama was lovely and had a really wonderful start. Actually, the beginning felt more uplifting and inspiring than the other film I mentioned earlier. I believe the author enjoys telling stories about life in the American West during the latter half of the 19th century, and she’s clearly become skilled at crafting them. However, this story is set in Canada in 1910, following Elizabeth Thatcher, a young woman from a wealthy family who wants to be a teacher. She's easily frightened and has never experienced the challenges of the outside world. Despite that, she decides to leave her fears behind and face life’s difficulties. A bet with her older sister prompts her to prove she can handle any obstacle while pursuing her dream job. Her inspiration comes in an unexpected way, and then she resolves to follow suit. As is typical for a made-for-TV movie, most of the actors were unfamiliar. While Maggie Grace stood out, every character and the performers who portrayed them were quite impressive. The music was another strong point. The narration style was acceptable, along with decent cinematography and beautiful locations. The same filmmaker who directed the first four 'Love Comes Softly' films also wrote the screenplay and handled directing duties here. The ending felt rushed, but overall the film was quite short. I felt like it was just getting started, and I wasn’t mistaken. After watching, I searched for a sequel, hoping one existed. I was confident that there would be more of the story to come. Similarly, I discovered something interesting, which I'll explain later on. > "It appears I'm not fit to go west." I don’t usually care for movies made specifically for television. I only recently started exploring them and have been distracted by their flaws—specifically, the technical errors are significant. But then I realized that, considering the budget and TV production standards, they’re quite remarkable. I think I'm beginning to appreciate Hallmark movies and Jannete Oke’s work as well. I don’t know how differently this story would have played out if it had been a theatrical release with a larger cast, but I am very pleased with this sweet little TV film. Now I realize that sometimes smaller productions can showcase great stories and appeal to their own audience. I know literature fans often dislike adaptations like this one, but I’m a movie enthusiast, and this is the best way for me to connect with classic books. There are eight books in the 'Canadian West' series, but the filmmakers decided to turn the remaining books into a television series. Because I enjoyed this film so much, I plan to watch the series as well. This one served as a pilot movie for the series, so it will be interesting to see how they are. The ratings and reviews online have been overwhelmingly positive. I’m very eager and maybe I'll write another review if I get a chance to see them. For now, I strongly recommend this film for families and anyone seeking inspiration. 9/10
