I’ve never really cared for screwball comedy, and after just a few minutes of what felt like an overly precise sequence of unlikely events, along with what I found to be an annoying portrayal of "Judy" from Barbra Streisand, I was prepared to dislike the movie entirely. However, once things calmed down a bit, and Madeline Kahn managed to find her footing in her own frustrating character, I began to think that the nerdy rock musician “Howard” (Ryan O’Neal) seemed completely lost as these two women took control of his life and tried their best to ruin it. From the beginning, you’re aware there's a secondary storyline involving tartan holdalls—four of them, actually—and some sneaky dealings related to getting one of those bags, which clearly holds something secret, setting up a chaotic situation that leads to an excellent "Wacky Races"-style car chase through San Francisco where no one is safe. There’s a genuine spark between Streisand and O'Neal, and it made me remember that before she started worrying about how people said her last name, she had really good comedic timing alongside her powerful singing voice. Even though the ending isn't surprising, there are enough unexpected developments along the way to keep this lighthearted film enjoyable even nearly half a century later, and it highlights O’Neal’s abilities as someone who complements the other performers well.
