Reno on What We Do in the Shadows

6/10 · Jul 14, 2016

This video presentation details the existence of vampires. It's a horror comedy presented as a documentary, expanding on a short film by the same directors. It feels like an interview with vampires, but done in a New Zealand style. The story centers around a group of vampires residing in an old house and their regular lives, which includes how they acquire blood and dealing with other unusual beings—all captured through documentation. It's certainly a funny movie, though it evokes elements of 'Dark Shadows' and 'The Addams Family'. The title suggests a look into the nighttime activities of these creatures, particularly as they adopt a contemporary lifestyle. This is where their story begins, presented as a video record. The film concentrates on how difficult it can be to stand out from others. It shows dangers coming from different places and overcoming unfortunate situations. It’s an engaging vampire movie with memorable characters, naturally filmed mostly at night. It avoids tired tropes instead offering a humorous take on the usual vampire story. The script and direction are smart, complemented by strong acting. While many people seem to have really liked it, I enjoyed watching it but didn't love it as much. I’ve seen other films with similar ideas that were better. Still, I would suggest checking it out because it’s worth seeing. 6/10
