I’m glad this film didn’t receive a top rating; I believe that would have been undeserved. Not long ago, criticizing a movie like "What Men Want" in any way could have triggered a strong negative reaction from audiences. The failure of “Ocean's 8” and the mostly positive reviews it received—which seemed to stem more from apprehension than genuine appreciation—also demonstrated a cast that appeared largely unenthusiastic about aggressively targeting anyone who didn’t purchase a ticket. It appears critics are now willing to assign lower scores, but only after initially offering praise in their written analyses, presumably as a precaution. Imagine the Gibson version of "What Women Want," then amplify the raunchiness and vulgarity to an extreme degree with depictions of women that would likely lead to arrests for several men. Consider it somewhat misogynistic, and further, that this bias is rooted in racial prejudice, which suggests the film’s aim is to signal how progressive it is by portraying a specific combination of race and gender as inherently bad. Essentially, it resembles the original "Birth of a Nation," with its propagandistic portrayal of race, combined with a romantic comedy crafted and directed by Andrew Dice Clay.
