A couple—played by Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer—grapples with the realities of an empty nest as unsettling supernatural events begin to occur near Lake Champlain. Diana Scarwid, James Remar, and Miranda Otto appear in supporting parts. "What Lies Beneath," released in 2000, is a thriller that blends elements of drama and mystery with touches of horror. It initially takes cues from "Rear Window," but thankfully moves beyond that influence. I began to feel antsy around the sixty-minute mark; the narrative felt drawn out, punctuated by doors opening for no apparent reason. The fact that Michelle Pfeiffer isn’t really my type didn't help—though she does a perfectly acceptable job (I can’t say I dislike her); and Harrison Ford’s character comes across as unnecessarily irritable and short-tempered. Despite those issues, the Vermont/New York locations are gorgeous, and a sense of intrigue is created effectively. The resolution is surprising, unless you've already seen the trailer, which gives away far too much. The final special effects sequence is lovely in its spectral quality and provides a feeling of completion; things that seemed confusing earlier on become clear. Ultimately, it’s not a great movie, but it’s not without merit if you’re looking for something like this. The film's running time is 2 hours and 10 minutes, and filming took place in the Lake Champlain area of Vermont/New York (specifically Burlington, D.A.R. State Park, Waterbury & Westport), with additional work completed in Southern California (Los Angeles, Playa Vista & Culver City). GRADE: C+/B-
