It’s a genuine romantic comedy geared toward adults. Please excuse how long this is; I had written roughly 500 words detailing everything, but then my cat accidentally stepped on the mouse and deleted it all. The film feels like it's from another world where Gerard Butler didn't end romantic comedies in American movies during the 2010s, and instead, the genre continued to flourish as it did in the 90s. Duchovny and Ryan are incredibly charming, which is what you’d anticipate from a movie that essentially has only three people listed in the credits. Those two actors, plus whoever provides the voice for the airport's public address system. Considering this rom-com comes from Meg Ryan, who practically defined 90s romantic comedies, and it’s dedicated to Nora Ephron, even the straightforward plot of "two former lovers are stranded at a small regional airport due to snow" is elevated with a certain special quality. While Ryan isn't afraid to embrace sentimentality (the airport almost seems alive in how the ‘magic’ of the day keeps the characters together), the movie also displays considerable maturity. It doesn't simply hand you what you expect from a romantic comedy. There's a sense of sophistication throughout. I believe the best way I can praise this film is to say it resembles an excellent play where the sets seem to disappear. As you get to know both characters, they share stories, and because it’s Meg Ryan and David Duchovny, they have the talent to draw you into those narratives so completely that you feel like you're witnessing a memory. It was wonderful to watch. I am hoping it does well enough to demonstrate that cutting unnecessary expenses and simply creating a really good romantic comedy is both achievable and financially rewarding. It earns a 9/10. I’m eager to acquire a physical copy, place it on my shelf, and indulge in rewatching it every few months when the mood strikes.
