It's refreshing to find a film that prioritizes storytelling and character development over extravagant special effects and a reliance on well-known actors, especially given how much money is often spent in modern movies. This movie does just that. The story centers around the Whangara people, who have maintained their customs and community since before New Zealand existed as a country, all rooted in the legend of “Paikea” and his line of chiefs. Into this male-dominated society comes “Pai” (Keisha Castle-Hughes), but her grandfather “Koro” (Rawiri Paratene) prevents her from participating in activities where she could excel compared to the boys, leading to feelings of rejection and loneliness. What choices does she have? Will she embrace a traditional role like her grandmother, or will she question deeply ingrained beliefs and demonstrate that girls are equally capable of carrying on the legacy of their ancestor? The film functions effectively when viewed from multiple viewpoints. Through Pai’s eyes, we see the difficulties faced by an intelligent young woman trying to break free from generations of male dominance; through Koro's perspective, it illustrates a man feeling unable to change customs he is so deeply entrenched in. Despite sharing a common heritage, this very tradition also creates a rift between them. The film’s final moments clarify the meaning behind its title and encapsulate the interconnectedness of a narrative that portrays a culture living alongside nature and spiritual beliefs, though perhaps not fully embracing progress. Castle-Hughes and director Niki Caro's adaptation of Witi Ihimaera’s moving novel provide an excellent illustration of how simplicity can be powerful, set against the backdrop of a land where whales are held in as much esteem as the recollections of those who came before.
