I decided to watch this film because of the director; I’d really enjoyed ‘Combat Girls’ and had high hopes for something similar. However, it turned out to be a completely different kind of experience—very original—and I was captivated from beginning to end. The movie is based on a novel with the same title, which received positive attention and was later translated into English, although there were discussions about whether it dealt with erotic themes. I’m not familiar with the book; I tend to focus on films instead. I didn't notice any of the issues people have raised regarding the source material. When reading a book, you naturally create your own images in your mind, but a movie provides everything perfectly—including the music, which was definitely a plus. It seems that for a novel to truly succeed, it needs to reach someone with vision and creativity who can convey their interpretation to others. We all know kids who ignore their parents’ instructions and do the opposite of what they're told. This kind of stubbornness can also be seen in some adults, often stemming from difficult childhoods or challenging family situations. The film explores a similar theme, but pushes it further—perhaps too far for some viewers. > It's better to have a scratched knee now, > than to have a broken heart later on. The movie was shockingly unpleasant and, frankly, the most repulsive I’ve ever seen; easily within the top three, five, or ten worst. Whatever methods they employed, they certainly weren't subtle in their approach. Thankfully, I am male—the film centers around a female character. The actress was attractive enough that it lessened the impact of what you're seeing; I would consider this an advantage for such a subject matter. If the lead had been male, I probably would have turned it off halfway through and used some strong language. The story follows Helen, an 18-year-old girl who explains her rebellious nature by recounting her childhood memories. During her teenage years she became consumed with sexual fantasies, but that's not all the film is about. These events served to develop her character, which takes up most of the movie’s runtime, leaving little room for the current events unfolding in a hospital setting. Her relationships with her family are an important part of the narrative; she never felt understood by any of them. Her father was irresponsible and sexually active, her mother constantly lectured her, and she didn't have a typical sibling relationship with her brother. By the final third of the film, you’ll likely form a complete picture of Helen and possibly change your opinion of her. Still unsettling is her acceptance of an all-encompassing theory. While there are other films that depict children experiencing similar hardships to Helen, this one stands out in its handling of such a sensitive topic. It's open for debate whether parents will take the film seriously, as it also addresses parental failure and some disturbing themes. There’s humor mixed with the unpleasantness, and overall it’s an exceptional movie geared toward adults. If you can tolerate challenging content and appreciate variety in your viewing choices, then this could be an enjoyable experience. It would be better to dub it into English rather than attempt a remake. I tend to favor German films because I'm selective and do my research beforehand; I knew going in that this was intended as a commercial release and prepared myself to enjoy it accordingly. 7/10
