The production values were solid. I appreciated the cast overall; however, Ansel Elgort’s portrayal of the main character, Tony, didn't grab me—he seemed rather bland. The narrative and musical numbers failed to resonate with me. I do have a couple more observations: The elaborate dance sequences reminiscent of Broadway performances lessened the sense of danger associated with the street gangs. Falling in love instantly is not realistic, and it’s an inadequate justification for violence or death. Strong feelings like attraction, fascination, and desire can certainly occur immediately, but genuine love develops over time.
